What are Invisalign Clear Aligners?

Let’s start with the basics. Invisalign treatment involves receiving a set of aligners – Invisalign clear aligners are made of flexible, BPA-free, medical-grade plastic. The aligners slowly move your teeth into the desired position, closing gaps and repairing misalignment or bite issues. They are custom-made per patient to fit their particular smile. This orthodontic treatment has grown in popularity amongst teens and adults alike because, unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are removable and virtually invisible. It’s very common to wear each set of aligners for approximately 2 weeks before needing to upgrade to new ones as your teeth begin shifting into their desired position, however, this timeline will vary based on your specific needs.

While the Invisalign system is designed to address many issues from minor gaps and misalignment to bite corrections, it may not be the best option for all cases. This is why you should book a consultation with our dentist to determine if you’re a good candidate for this treatment or if you’d be better suited for other orthodontic treatments such as traditional braces.

The length of Invisalign treatment depends on the complexity of each case. On average, most patients complete treatment within 12 to 18 months. Treatment time will vary depending on individual needs and if patients follow the instructions laid out by our team, such as wearing their aligners for up to 22 hours a day, continuing to brush and floss daily, and being diligent with visiting us for check-ups and to receive a new set of aligners. Our team can provide you with an estimated treatment timeline during your consultation.

While you can remove your Invisalign aligners to eat, drink anything but water, and brush and floss your teeth, they should be worn 22 hours a day. If you do not wear your aligners accordingly, your treatment will take longer than originally anticipated. Many patients report straighter teeth in just a few weeks when they follow their treatment plan!

Unlike braces, clear aligners are removable and easy to clean (making it easier to clean your teeth too!) Your aligners should be cleaned at least once per day. There are a few methods we recommend:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to brush them and then rinse with lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water as this can warp the plastic.
  • Purchase Invisalign cleaning crystals and follow the instructions on the package.
  • If cleaning crystals aren’t available, you can just use a denture cleaner and follow the instructions on the package. Always rinse with lukewarm water before putting them back in your mouth.

Some other general care tips include:

  • Never leave them to air dry. This can cause them to dry out and crack, warp, or get damaged. Either remove them and put them in a bowl with a cleaning agent mentioned above, in a cup of lukewarm water, or in their respective containers which you’ll receive at the beginning of your treatment.
  • Never eat or drink anything but water with your aligners in your mouth as this can also cause damage or discolouration.
  • Never use abrasive materials, like tooth whitening toothpaste or even mouthwash with your aligners in – they can cause warping.
  • Always clean your teeth before putting your aligners back in. Debris left in your teeth can discolour the aligners.
  • Don’t forget them, especially if you’re going on vacation! Take them with you everywhere so you can continue to straighten your teeth and achieve your smile goals.

Invisalign aligners are made from a flexible and comfortable plastic material, making them comfortable and non-irritating. The only time you may experience some mild discomfort or pressure is when you begin wearing the next set of aligners, however, this usually subsides after a day or two.

Many dental insurance plans cover Invisalign treatment similarly to braces, but it’s best to check with your insurance provider prior to treatment to understand your coverage options.

Remember that Invisalign aligners are designed to move your teeth into their desired position, but not keep them there permanently. After completing treatment, most patients need to wear a retainer to keep their teeth in their new position. Our dentist will discuss your post-treatment plan with you in detail, including how often you’ll need to wear your retainers, but they’re typically just worn at night.
